Blue Kintsugi (2024)

Dedicated to E (pseudonym), a tender being, even while needing care, always offering to care for others. Soft washes of blue, E’s favorite color, ebb  and flow across the paper to match the shifting calmness and the undercurrent of quiet sorrow in his hospital room. Each gradation of blue reflects his calm acceptance of circumstance, while subtle darker tones hint at the tears his parents shed by bedside. We spoke about kintsugi’s gold-mended cracks and musical motifs that could heal invisible wounds. Yet what moved me most, was E’s quiet strength, their unwavering embrace of life, and ability to love as deeply as ever.

This work honors V (pseudonym) an unwavering creative spirit whose body ached but whose hands always found relief in drawing. Here, the pulsing purples radiate both pain and the parallel, ripple effect of V’s smile and generosity in the hospital room. This piece marks the unfinished chapter that V often spoke about in session, dreams of their future, imagined paths never taken, and their poetry left unwritten.
